- Never mow more than 1/3 the height of the grass, this will put stress on the lawn and reduce its growth and leave it susceptible to disease and interrupt the nutrient cycle.
- To reduce grass clippings sticking to the under side of your lawn mower or in your bag, cut the lawn when it is dry. The best time is early evening. If you mow in the morning be sure the dew has evaporated.
- Make sure your lawnmower has a sharp blade. a clean cut is important to protect the grass blade, a clean cut will do less damage to the blades of grass and will ensure quick growth. If your blade is dull it tears the grass blade instead of cutting . This creates damage to the grass blades and leaves the lawn with a yellow tinge as the tops of the grass blades turn yellow. This also increases the risk the lawn can be susceptible to a host of diseases and growth issues.
- remove debris such as built up grass under the deck after every session. This build up reduces the volume your blade has to work with so you will have to progress forward slower then normal while cutting the lawn thus wasting your time. Also the build up retains moisture which can promote oxidation or ” rusting ” under the deck, compromising the integrity of your mower.
- make sure the lawn mower’s bag is clear so air can pass through it. Your bag acts like a large air filter. If you have a dirty air filter less air volume can pass through it which means you won’t be filling your lawn mower bag as full as it could be. So rinse out your bag once in a while to collect as many clippings as you can.
- remove the lawn mower’s air filter and give it a shake, especially if you are cutting in dusty conditions. This will help prolong the life of your engine. Replace filter when necessary.
